Strengthening Local Journalism through Regional Collaborations

We’re excited to see that NPR has recently joined forces with the New England News Collaborative (NENC) to establish a regional newsroom, encompassing ten stations across six states from Connecticut to Maine.

This collaboration marks NPR’s fifth regional newsroom, following those in Texas, California, the Gulf States, and the Midwest. Collaborative newsrooms enhance public media organizations’ capability to deliver trustworthy, multimedia journalism—an essential ingredient in fostering healthy communities and a thriving democracy.

This is precisely the type of journalistic collaboration that Public Media Company is proud to support. Previously, we served as a planning partner for the NENC, along with other collaborative newsrooms in Texas, California, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, and the Gulf States. From our extensive experience, successful news collaborations begin by adhering to several key steps:

Build Trust: Establishing mutual trust among all participating organizations is crucial. Open communication and transparency lay the foundation for a successful partnership.

Agree on Shared Vision: All partners must align on the mission, goals, and values of the collaboration. A unified vision ensures that everyone is working towards the same objectives.

Develop Conceptual Framework: Outline the structure, processes, and roles within the collaboration. A clear framework provides guidance and helps manage expectations.

Include Stakeholders: Engage key stakeholders early in the process. Their input and support are vital for gaining community trust and ensuring the collaboration meets public needs.

Put Details on Paper: Formalize agreements with detailed documentation. Clear contracts and guidelines help prevent misunderstandings and keep the collaboration on track.

If you are considering formulating a collaborative journalism entity, we can help ensure you have a vision, operating structure, and sustainable business model to secure your collaboration’s long-term success. Reach out to Alison Scholly, Managing Director at Public Media Company to learn more.
